What is Sports Science?

At first glance, the juxtaposition of the chaotic world of sports with the rigid world of science may seem strange. In truth, though, sports science is responsible for many of the great feats of modern sporting. Incorporating everything from diet and exercise to the engineering of equipment, the field is broad and fascinating, with multiple interweaving aspects.
Sports science actually first got its start in ancient Greece, as many texts discussed the proper diets and exercise regimens for athletes. The renaissance furthered the development of science and medicine, and because of this, sports science was furthered and developed still more, with a better understanding of things like circulation allowing the development of new techniques. The next step was the establishment in the early 19th century of many American medical schools, which once again broadened the base of knowledge available and allowed for new insights and developments in the field of sports science. Nowadays the field has developed to an incredible degree, and the face of modern sports has been forever changed by it and its discoveries.
Sports science focuses on quantifying and understanding what goes into an athlete’s performance, from diet to muscle balance to equipment. Many of the statistics passed around about various athletes are aspects of sports science, charting the athlete’s skills in a numerical, rigidly defined fashion. In addition, most modern practice and exercise regimens are scientifically designed to target an athlete’s strengths and weaknesses as precisely as possible.
Looking at the development of sports, it’s easy to see the impact the scientific approach has had. Records are broken constantly in nearly every field due to the impact better training, dieting, and practicing has had. The world of sports today would look amazing to people from only a few decades ago, with our modern athletes performing seemingly superhuman feats. Sports science, far from being something reserved and clinical, allows for more fascinating performances now than ever before.
In short, while at first sports science may seem like a strange concept, in truth it’s an ancient one and a valuable one. Scientists can study athletes to work out aspects of anatomy, physics, and the like, and sporting benefits from the improvements possible to the human body. Without sports science, sports as we know them would not exist, and the world would be lacking some truly amazing events, people, and games.
