What Is A Hypothesis

Many people use the word hypothesis frequently without really knowing the meaning of it.

Some people foolishly quantify a hypothesis as a guess, but in reality it is more of an educated guess. Scientists are often prompted to develop a hypothesis, because they have notice something either in research or observation that leads them to believe there is a clear pattern between variables. A hypothesis usually comes in the form of an “If, then” format. A simple example of this could be, “If a plant is watered daily, then it will grow.” Not all hypotheses will be this simple, but it does form the basic idea. Through one's experience, water helps plants grow, but by forming a hypothesis, it is now possible to test this theory in a controlled and scientific way.

In summary, a hypothesis is a theorized explanation for why something happens. In science, a hypothesis is where all experiments begin, so for that reason, it is the first step in the scientific method. If a scientist has a question about the relationship between two or more variables, they must first propose an answer to this question. It is from this point, that it is possible to develop an experiment to test whether or not the proposed answer is correct or false.
