Tips for Studying Science

For the most part, the most important aspects of studying science are the same as for any other discipline, but there are a few tips and tricks that can particularly help out with the sciences. Remember, no matter what else you do, don’t be intimidated by science material – with very few exceptions, the seeming complexity of any scientific concept is easily broken into smaller, simpler ideas.

Your textbook (or, if you’re studying alone, whatever book you’re using to study with) can be an invaluable resource. Read carefully over it all, making sure you fully understand every concept – seemingly simple and unimportant concepts may well be used as the foundations for later ideas. If there’s a section you don’t understand, check the Internet for more information or ask your teacher/professor to help you out – don’t be shy about asking for help. A student who asks honest questions about things they don’t understand is far superior to one who lets the opportunity to learn slip them by. Also, when studying from your textbook, make sure you honestly examine any diagrams and pictures accompanying the text – they can help you understand the concepts more completely and often offer important information.

Sleep is one of your most important resources when studying anything, and the sciences are no exception. Sleep allows the things you focused on most during the day to solidify themselves in your long term memory, instead of being parts of the jumble of chaos that is short term memory. Always study the night before a test at the very least, not right before – and if you find yourself struggling with a concept or an idea, sleep on it. It might well help you clarify and focus your understanding.

Studying with others can always be useful. Form a study group and talk out concepts with each other. You may find yourself realizing that you know more than you thought you did. Explaining things to others helps you understand them better yourself, and of course the others can explain to you the things that you have more trouble with. Together in a group, understanding even fairly complex ideas can become easy.

It’s important to try to understand science as a ‘pyramid’ of ideas, not as a series of unincorporated facts. Each new concept in science builds on those before it, instead of simply hanging in space. If you are focused on a specific discipline, it should be possible to see how things link and fit together. Doing so can help you understand new concepts – if you understand the ideas making up a new concept, then you can understand the new concept with only a little extra work.

Once you start learning how to approach it, science doesn’t have to be intimidating – many of the concepts involved are honestly fascinating, and proper studying will let you see them in the right light. Study hard and do your best to understand, and soon you’ll have a great grasp on science.
