|
Information science is a diverse field, with aspects taken from fields ranging from computer science to law. Because of this broad focus, backgrounds in information science can open doors to many types of career, and there are broad opportunities available.
One of the main career paths for an information science major is that of librarian. Information science focuses heavily on categorization and sorting of information, which is also the main focus of library work. Many schools offer Library and Information Science as a major in addition to Information Science on its own, allowing students to gain a better understanding of the workings of the Dewey decimal system, categorization systems, and more. There are many options available for library work, ranging from public and school libraries to detailed legal libraries, and the options are there for anyone who wants to take them. Library work, far from being a simple job, is exciting, complex, and requires a great deal of skill – skill that can be gained through study of information science.
There are other options, of course. Careers in management call for skill with organizing large amounts of information, which of course is the focus of information science. The skills needed to manage large amounts of people, a huge amount of data flow, and the like are directly related to those needed in information science. Business is a promising option for any information science major, and can be made into a great career.
Technical information services of course also benefit from a major in this field. There are a multitude of jobs that call for someone who is able to manage a database for users and quickly retrieve information from it. From catalogs to indexes, information science provides benefits in a multitude of ways. Building an accessible source of data for the users is also a key feature, requiring a good understanding of the organization and the like required.
There are many options beyond these. Nearly every career path can be furthered by a good knowledge of information science. There are traditional careers for the major, most notably library work, but the options are next to limitless. And, of course, if you gain enough knowledge of the field, it’s always an option to help out others by becoming a professor and researching and teaching in the field. Enjoy, and make the career decision that works best for you!
